What’s the difference between the glycinate, citrate and other forms of magnesium?

Magnesium comes in various forms typically attached to another molecule in a structure called a chelate. Differing chelates of magnesium lend themselves to different therapeutic actions due to changes in absorbability and based on the biological properties of the attached molecule.

Magnesium glycinate is a chelate structure where magnesium is attached to the amino acid glycine. It and magnesium citrate are considered the most highly absorbable forms of magnesium. However, unlike magnesium citrate, magnesium glycinate does not produce a laxative effect in the large intestine, making it gentler and often more tolerable than magnesium citrate.
