This bright yellow spice, used for thousands of years for a variety of healing purposes in Ayurvedic medicine, has been shown in a multitude of clinical trials to effectively combat inflammation.

Turmeric owes much of its health-enhancing power to the unique inflammation-fighting antioxidants it contains called curcuminoids, the best-known of which is curcumin. Key studies have shown that curcumin blocks inflammatory pathways, reduces levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, neutralizes inflammation-causing free radicals, and relieves pain and stiffness as effectively as other popular doctor-recommended options—all without side effects.

In recent years, many clients have reported after trying turmeric supplements disappointing results. They’re often frustrated and on the verge of giving up on natural solutions.

What they don’t realize is that, while the clinical research on curcumin’s ability to combat inflammation is rock-solid, most turmeric supplements fail to deliver the results shown in the research. That’s because they’re cheaply made by companies that put more money into marketing than they put into formulation.

You see, anytime a nutrient shows as much scientific promise as turmeric has with hundreds of studies confirming its amazing health benefits, there’s a “gold rush” by supplement makers to cash in and make a quick buck. To do this, many of them cut corners, taking advantage of the hype and flooding the market with turmeric products that don’t come close to the dosage specifications and quality indicated by the research.

Why So Many Turmeric Supplements Fail to Deliver Results

1) You need A LOT of turmeric to get the results shown in the research. Numerous studies suggest that a minimum of 500 mg per day is needed to reduce inflammation, and in our experience, 700 mg per day works much better. Yet many supplements contain far less than that. 

2) Turmeric is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb. In many studies, even very large oral doses have failed to yield significant increases in circulating blood levels. But a patented extract of black pepper called BioPerine® has been shown to increase turmeric’s absorption by an astonishing 2,000%! Yet many supplement makers don’t include BioPerine® in their formulas.

3) Many turmeric supplements are not standardized. Standardization brings the active ingredients in a plant to a consistent level. To get meaningful results, you need a turmeric supplement that is standardized to contain at least 75% curcuminoids (or ideally, closer to 95% curcuminoids). Otherwise, what you're getting could be little more than a pill filled with powdered turmeric root.

4) Turmeric is only a “partial solution” for pain and inflammation. When it comes to effective inflammation relief, you need to address all of the primary pathways of inflammation in the body. Turmeric only addresses some of these pathways, which means even the best supplements are limited in how much relief they can provide.

Working directly with clients, we’ve learned a very important lesson about overcoming inflammation using natural means: There are several primary inflammation pathways, and the most effective way to reduce inflammation is to address ALL of these pathways at the same time.

While turmeric addresses some of these pathways very effectively, there’s another remarkably powerful natural anti-inflammatory called palmitoylethanolamide, or PEA, a little-known fatty acid that works on inflammation pathways turmeric can’t touch. Using PEA with clients for a few years now has shown results that have been nothing short of stunning.

 

What Exactly Is PEA and How Does It Work?

PEA is essentially your body’s built-in natural painkiller.

How exactly does it work? Well, new research published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences shows that PEA helps neutralize COX-2, iNOS and TNFα, a notorious trio of factors associated with inflammation and pain.

When inflammation strikes, your body synthesizes PEA on demand and releases it right at the source to help relieve pain. PEA also comes to the rescue when you’re having an allergic reaction, helps muscles recover, and can even help improve your mood and sleep.

The big problem is that your body’s PEA production can rapidly decline as you age or be depleted from persistent injury or ongoing pain. The timing of this couldn’t be worse because this just exacerbates the cycle of inflammation and pain.

For years, PEA was virtually unknown in the United States and very little research had been done on it. But thanks to European researchers (who are generally far more advanced with natural remedies), PEA is gaining acceptance among forward-thinking health practitioners.

 

Research Confirms PEA’s Effectiveness for Pain Relief

We’ve seen extraordinary results using PEA for pain and inflammation relief in the clinic, and this success has been validated by gold-standard research from around the world. Here’s a quick sampling of some of the incredible clinical results:

• Lower Back Pain Relief for 9 out of 10 People: In an Italian trial with 636 patients, 90% of those taking 600 mg of PEA daily reported “good or excellent” effectiveness at providing greater lower-back comfort after three weeks of usage—with 51% rating it “excellent.”

• Knee Comfort Improved Quickly: In a study published in Inflammopharmacology, participants who were given 600 mg of PEA reported a “significant reduction” in pain scores versus those taking a placebo in eight weeks.

• Aches Relieved All Over the Body for 88% of Participants: In a hospital study, 407 patients with widespread aches and tenderness that wouldn’t go away received 600 mg of PEA. Of those, a full 88% reported “significant” score improvements for comfort and quality of life.

• Pain “Significantly Decreased”: Patients with various types of persistent pain were given 600 mg of PEA twice daily for 3 weeks, followed by a single daily dose for 4 weeks. By the end of the trial, PEA “significantly decreased” the severity and intensity of pain for those taking it, and it worked no matter the source of their pain.

And there have been no serious side effects noted with PEA use.

The combination of turmeric and PEA is wonderfully effective, but we’ve found that incorporating a third anti-inflammatory, a powerful Ayurvedic herb called boswellia into my Triple-Action Inflammation Relief Protocol yields even better results for our clients.
