Getting outdoors and moving your body is key to boosting your health and supercharging your energy! Our bodies are designed to move, and science proves time and time again that those who exercise consistently have more energy, less fatigue, and a sharper focus.
We are well-aware that this science proves true, yet, oftentimes, we find ourselves getting into the groove of the work day, slouched over at our desk, for hours on end.
Make it a habit to incorporate movement into your daily routine. Here are some very simple, doable ways to add movement to your day:
Set a timer and get standing.
Using your watch, your phone, or your computer’s calendar, set a timer for every hour (or every 30 minutes if you’re feeling extra motivated). When your timer goes off, stand up or walk around the office for a quick 30-60 seconds. This time frame is a quick enough break to refresh your mind and body without taking you out of the groove of your work.
Making an excuse not to set a timer? Make a conscious effort to keep a mental note of when the clock strikes the top of the hour. When you glance at the clock and recognize the new hour, that's your time to get moving.
Take a walk on your lunch break.
When lunchtime rolls around, it’s time to fuel up with food, and for many, it’s a time to regroup and take a breather. Often times, we relax from the morning spent slouched over our computers, by doing more sitting. Rather than falling into the pattern of constant lounging, spend half of your break eating, and the other half by stepping outside, (if the weather permits) and going for a stroll. Walk around the building, or go up and down the sidewalk a few times. Use this time to stretch your limbs, and fill your lungs with fresh air.
Park further away at the grocery store, or at work.
Use the task of running errands to your body’s advantage. Park a row further away than you likely would, and add in a few extra steps to your routine. If you don’t run errands each day, how about parking further for work? For the majority, heading to the office each day is a constant in our lives, therefore, parking further away from the office door, is a great, consistent way to start your day with brisk movement.
These tips are simple, excuse-free ways to get into the habit of adding movement into your routine, and are intended to complement the heart-healthy aerobic activity recommended daily.
We live in a 24/7 on-the-go world –don’t let the fast pace nature of the world we live in slow you down from taking back your health and supercharging your energy!
